Vector Borne Disease and Land Use Change

Much of the Amazon rainforest consists of either highly fragmented forests adjacent to agricultural lands, or large, mostly undisturbed Indigenously owned reserves. Yet, our current knowledge of sylvatic (jungle) mosquitoes and associated arboviruses circulating in intact forests is relatively unknown. Our team recently received funding through the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine to better characterize mosquito-borne arboviruses in the Konashen Amerindian Protected Area using a mobile molecular diagnostic laboratory.
